Gesturing towards his torn pockets, his ripped shoe, his inability to hear or speak, Ranbir beautifully conveys Barfi's deep hurt at being rejected. His life finds new meaning when he's saddled with his childhood friend Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic girl belonging to a wealthy local family.

In Barfi, writer-director Anurag Basu creates a gossamer, fairy-tale world. Sometime in the 1970s, somewhere in the misty hills of Darjeeling, a penniless but irresistibly charming deaf-mute boy named Barfi gets the prettiest girl in town to kiss him. But their sweetly awkward love affair comes undone, after which Barfi embarks on an adventure with an autistic girl. Somehow these two, on their own, manage to survive the city of Kolkata - Barfi gets a job and even a ramshackle house with a spectacular view of Howrah Bridge. To point out that this is unlikely seems churlish. Because Barfi is designed to be a bittersweet, tender fable.
The London Indian film festival opened on Wednesday with Gangs of Wasseypur, a two-part epic about criminal dynasties who control a mining town in the lawless state of Jharkand. With its raw potrayal of a reality that never appears in the glossy utopia of Bollywood, it heralds a movement towards exposing the hypocrisies of Indian society about sex, drugs, development and injustice. And it's a movement that is not going unnoticed: Gangs was the first mainstream Indian film to compete in the director's fortnight at Cannes last month.
Also showing at the London festival is Gandu ("Arsehole"), a thrash-metal rap musical about a young dopehead and his lust for fame and sex that, despite being banned in India, has become one of the country's most talked about films, with its explicit opium smoking, foul language and masturbation. It's fringe cinema, but follows mainstream hits such as last year'sThe Dirty Picture – the fruity tale of a south Indian movie siren – the success of which indicates a greater honesty and confidence in discussing sexuality. Cannes also gave a warm reception to Miss Lovely, a story set in the pulpy soft-porn industry of 80s Bombay.
This new cinema is both a product of and a reaction to India's development since it opened its economy to the rest of the world. With dark-skinned heroes swearing liberally in Bhojpuri, a regional vernacular, and no mainstream stars, Gangs of Wasseypur is an exceptional film for a mainstream production company, enabled by the new fluidity of Indian society. Produced by Viacom, headed by Vikram Malhotra, a former airline executive, it is directed by Anurag Kashyap.

With moist eyes and prayers, Shammi Kapoor's family members and friends bid goodbye to the veteran actor at his funeral at the Ban Ganga cremation ground in Mumbai Monday morning 14th August.
Nephew Randhir Kapoor, grandnieces Karisma and Kareena, co-star Amitabh Bachchan, director Imtiaz Ali and many more visited the Blue Heaven Society on Malabar Hill to pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor, who breathed his last Sunday morning at the Breach Candy Hospital. He was 79.
Among the early birds from the film fraternity were Amitabh who came with wife Jaya, director Subhash Ghai, Anupam Kher, Imran Khan and his wife Avantika.
Industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani were also among the early ones to pay their homage to the actor, who died of kidney failure after a week's hospitalization.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal too came to pay his tributes to the legend.

Salman Khan Being Human (SKBH) Productions’ first co-production, “Chillar Party”, will be the opening film of the IIFA Film Festival to be held in Toronto, the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) announced yesterday. In just a few short weeks, the 12th Videocon d2h IIFA Weekend and the Floriana IIFA Awards will bring the magic and glamour of Asia’s most venerable cinematic festivities to North America for the very first time.
The film “Chillar Party” is a light-hearted but touching comedy that revolves around the lives of seven children each hailing from the various strata’s of society, typical of suburban Mumbai. The movie is a simple and heart-warming peek into the journey of a group of kids who defeat the odds and prove their loyalty to a friend. “Chillar Party” has been co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala and SKBH Productions.
The actor was present at the announcement along with directors, Vikas Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari and UTV CEO, Siddharth Roy Kapoor. Salman Khan, speaking of the film said, “Chillar Party is very close to my heart, the concept appealed to me and the children’s performances were endearing. This is the first film under SKBH Productions and we felt there was no better place to screen the movie than at the IIFA Film Festival. For me, IIFA is home-grounds and it can’t get bigger than IIFA in Toronto.”
This year, IIFA has a special treat in store for its Indo-Canadian fan base, three days of high-octane entertainment and spell-binding motion pictures - the IIFA Film Festival, set to take place at theatres across the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) beginning on 24th June. The IIFA Film Festival began in 2005 to give international audiences in the host country a flavour of Indian Cinema, showcasing some of the biggest blockbusters and films of repute, which have created a mark in the history of Indian Cinema.

This year, the festival has been designed keeping in mind the Punjabi population across four cities, Toronto, Markham, Brampton and Mississuaga, where the screenings will take place. The assortment of films are a mix of classics and blockbusters from Bollywood, almost 20 of them based in and around Punjab.
This year, the Government of Ontario and Premier Dalton McGuinty have appointed the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel as the charity of choice for support throughout the IIFA Weekend in Toronto in 2011. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel is a mentoring organization for children and youth that is committed to providing caring adult relationships for children to promote their healthy development and enhance their self esteem. As figures and role models that children and youth would aspire to, IIFA will be working with Indian film celebrities to be introduced as ‘honorary big brother & big sister’ volunteers.
